Welcome to Food
Fare...
Welcome to Food Fare, and the first
edition of our newsletter, Food Fare Notes.
Food Fare is a
special addition to the food blog
Appetizing Muse, and features recipes and culinary traditions from a variety
of countries and cultures, as well as food-specific topics. The site also
contains a collection of personal recipes from Shenanchie, many of them "comfort
foods" inherited through the generations.
Food Fare originated
as Shenanchie's Kitchen in May 2000. It was developed into a personal
cooking web site that was updated each month with personal favorites as well as
in-depth articles about the food and culture from different countries around the
world. The site closed in May 2005 because of Shenanchie's other commitments,
but she continued to make "foodie" entries at
Appetizing Muse.
Shenanchie's
Kitchen has reopened as Food Fare, bringing with it the global flavors found
in unique and original recipes, culinary culture and tradition, seasonal
favorites, kitchen and cooking tips, food links and more.

Ethnic Cuisine
Food Fare's
Ethnic & Traditional Cuisine includes information
about the food and culture of different countries, time periods and events.
Features contain bits of history, food traditions, lifestyle and dishes native
to the specific country, as well as authentic recipes. In most cases, there is
also a section of words and phrases in the native tongue of the subject.
Discover the richness of other
cultures and explore global food traditions by visiting our selection of ethnic
features, which currently include bits about the Basque people, Ireland, Japan,
Scotland and food in the Middle Ages.

Herbs & Spices
Herbs and spices are
extraordinarily expensive when purchased at a grocery store or specialty shop.
Some people take stabs at growing their own, while others are lucky enough to
produce vast quantities in home gardens.
At Food Fare, we have put together
a selection of spice blends that can easily be prepared at home.
Herb & Spice Recipe Blends >
Here's a sample:
Baking
Powder (Homemade)
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. cornstarch
Combine ingredients and
store in a sealable container in a dry place. Note: Recipe can be
doubled or tripled.
In addition, we have a page of herb
and spice varieties with definitions, uses and suggested substitutions.

Food Fare Recipes
Some of the recipes
to be found at Food Fare come from the culinary articles, but there is a
large number that come from Shenanchie, her friends and family, and other
sources. The collection has grown over many years and presents an enticing
display of various comfort foods, as well as long-held traditional dishes and a
simply marvelous array of surprising little food gems.
Many of the recipes also have extra
bits of information, such as origin and locality, as well as links to more about
specific foods in the dishes. We had some fun creating the Halloween recipes,
adding "spooky" animated graphics with black backgrounds.
