Jack-in-the-Box Salad

Posted 07/08/03

I've tried my third fast-food salad, and it's the worst of the lot so far. Today's lunch consisted of Southwestern Chicken Salad from Jack-in-the-Box. Nothing ever compares to the sumptuous photographs at the drive-up order menu, but the salad was a huge disappointment nonetheless. Promises of spicy kernel corn, beans and chicken were prominent in the advertisement, but the reality was a skimpy bit of chicken, about a teaspoon of kernel corn and no beans whatsoever. The meal was basically a big plastic plate full of lettuce with two thin slices of purple onion. It was the least enjoyable of the fast-food salads I have tried of late.

So far, I've found nothing but over-priced caricatures of salads between McDonalds, Dairy Queen and now Jack-in-the-Box. They all skimp on the chicken and cheese, but overcompensate with the cheapest of all vegetables: lettuce - as if the general public is too stupid to notice. One of the more interesting tricks is the illusion of placing the salad in a huge platter or smaller dish to make the salad look fuller than it really is. All of them come down to one basic premise: a huge rip-off and a whole let less than you should get for your money.

But if I had to rate the fast-food salads I've tried so far (on a scale from 1 to 10), I would rate them as follows:

The cost of the salads at McDonalds and Dairy Queen hover around $3.99, while the Jack-in-the-Box version was an astronomical $4.69. However, Dairy Queen was the best of the lost (flavor and portion-wise). If I was forced to eat one of the salads again, I would definitely opt for Dairy Queen.

Three down and one to go. My next go-around will be one of Wendy's new "garden fresh" meals. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it will even remotely resemble a real salad.
