Somali cream cheese dessert
1/2 to 3/4 C flour
1-1/2 TBS powdered milk
1 TBS active dry yeast
1 egg
1-1/2 TBS cream cheese, softened
1/8 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 C warm water
Vegetable oil (for frying)
In a bowl, combine flour, powdered milk and yeast in a bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together egg, cream cheese and vanilla extract. Blend into the flour mixture; add just enough water to form mixture into sticky dough. Turn onto a well-floured work surface; knead dough for about two minutes. Flatten dough to a 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into shapes with a pastry cutter or a knife. Heat vegetable oil to a depth of about 1-1/4-inches in a large pan or wok. Add pastry and fry until golden, cooking in batches if necessary. Remove with a slotted spoon; drain on paper towels and serve.
