Joyce O'Toole
Joyce Mary Maureen Watts was a former recipe contributor to Food Fare. Sadly, she passed away in November 2015.
Joyce was born in Timmins, Ontario, Canada. She had no brothers or sisters, but considered her cousin Jackie Labrecque-Daigle as close as a sister. Joyce moved to the United States when she was twenty-three years old, following her marriage to Barney O'Toole. The couple had one daughter, Shenanchie (aka Deborah O'Toole and Deidre Dalton), who was born in Connecticut.
Growing up in a small Canadian town, Joyce learned how to cook from her grandmother Celine Mondoux and her mother, Irene Watts. Later, Joyce learned more kitchen tricks such as cooking homemade French fries, baking a roast and other dishes that were handed down for many generations. She didn't consider herself much of a baker, although on occasion she did attempt apple pies with great success. "The baker in my family is my cousin Jackie," Joyce once said. "She makes probably the world's perfect pie crust."
Her favorite foods were Italian (especially spaghetti), mashed potatoes in any form, Mexican, Chinese and cabbage rolls. Her least favorite foods were melons, cucumbers and hominy.
Joyce retired from the banking industry several years before her death.
