Is it just me, or did the year 2011 simply fly-by? Looking out my window, I can see frost on the ground - no snow yet - and the tree branches are barren and rather gnarly. The cold is here to stay for a spell, which in turn increases my consumption of hot tea and cocoa.
Speaking of hot beverages, give this easy recipe a whirl:
Champurrado (Mexican Hot Chocolate)
2 C warm water
2 C milk
1/4 C Masa Harina (sub with 1/3 C nixtamal)
1 disc Mexican chocolate, chopped
3 piloncillo cones (brown sugar cones), chopped
1 pinch ground anise (optional)
In a large cooking pot, whisk Masa Harina into warm water until combined. Add milk, chocolate, piloncillo and anise. Bring to a simmer and whisk with a molinillo (wooden whisk, or use a stainless steel whisk) until chocolate is melted and sugar is dissolved. Serve in mugs.
As the Christmas holiday looms near and 2011 draws to a close, some people are probably looking back at the past year with apprehensive reflection. Most of us have suffered our share of trouble over the last twelve months because of economic uncertainties, not to mention coping with the ever-rising cost of food and other worries about the future. However, ponder this: As bad as you think you have it, someone else might have it far worse.
Happy Holidays from my house to yours...
