Ruiz Tamales

Wilbert's mother Elva makes homemade tamales from scratch twice a year. They are heavenly but difficult to make. I was lucky enough to participate in a marathon tamale-making sessions a few years ago, which I wrote about in my article Tamales (with detailed instructions and recipe ingredients).

The other day Wilbert found Ruiz (aka El Monterey) tamales at the Bargain Giant market by our house. He brought a half-dozen home so we could try them. They were frozen, so I simply cooked them in the microwave in their husks and the plastic wrap as well. They were divine – the closest substitution in taste to the homemade variety. I prefer the chicken variety to the beef as it seems to have more of a kick in flavor.

Ruiz also produces other frozen Mexican fare, such as burritos, chimichangas, enchiladas and taquitos. I can only speak for the excellence of the tamales, but if other foods from Ruiz are as authentic and tasteful, I'll be one of the first to start trying them.
