Friday's Grub

Last night I decided to prepare Wilbert a home-cooked meal. He was dumfounded and fervently grateful, as usual. I found a nice pair of pork steaks at Safeway, and when it came time simmered the meat with olive oil, sliced onion, garlic, mushrooms and teriyaki sauce. I prefer slow-cooking pork steaks because they seem tough otherwise, so I let the meat simmer for about an hour-and-a-half in my electric skillet.
In the meantime, I steamed fresh broccoli and made my version of parsley potatoes (red spuds quartered and cooked in the microwave, and then sprinkled with butter and dried parsley). As a dessert of sorts, I sliced red delicious apples and placed them on a plate with thin slivers of cheddar cheese.
Wilbert loved the meal, but was none-too-thrilled with dessert. I have to keep reminding myself of his Hispanic heritage. Dessert in his house while growing up mainly consisted of sweets such as caramel, cakes, and cookies.
I've always preferred "savory sweets" (slight sweet mixed with savory or salt). Oh well, he liked the main meal - which left more cheese and apple for me.
