Garden Report II
Posted Sat, 08/02/03
This morning I was watering the yard and garden. I noticed the zucchini looking as if it might not make it. The other day a large orange-yellow flower appeared on one of the zucchini plants, but this has since gone away and all that remains is a skeletal-looking plant. This has happened with the other zucchini, so I'm wondering if the bugs did their job and the zucchini have met their maker.
On the other hand, the tomatoes are coming into full bloom. We've had a few of the plump and red Early Girl's on our kitchen table. The corn is also doing well – the stalks are now taller than I am and they have flowered as well. The beans are coming along, and we've eaten some of those. As typical and trite as it sounds, vegetables from one's own garden have an unmistakably better taste than the store-bought varieties.
Whatever happened to the lettuce, broccoli, carrots and onions? We've managed to salvage a few of the onions, but I'm afraid the rest are lost. This is a first vegetable garden for Wilbert, so I can't fault him. It's basically my first, too, although in the past I've had tomatoes and carrots. We live and learn. Next year we'll hopefully have a better start and a handle on pest control.
