Bitter Brew

Posted Sun, 07/20/03

Yesterday we opened a new can of coffee, dipping into our "only-if-we're-out-of-the-good-stuff" reserves. We weren't really out of the good stuff (Folgers Breakfast Blend), but Wilbert was keen to try MJB's European Roast. Why do all of the coffee companies call refer to their heavily advertised types as "blends" or "roasts?" Is it supposed to make us all think it's a special flavor, carefully and exquisitely blended by hand? I think not.

At any rate, the European Roast is appalling. I knew we were in trouble when I saw the coffee grounds: fine, almost like a course powder. Even though I reduced the amount of brewing grounds, there was no escaping the bitter flavor of the coffee. Sometimes I think coffee companies and makers of Coffee Mate and similar products are in cahoots. I had to keep adding more and more of the Coffee Mate to get the bitter brew to change color just a whit.

I'm returning to Breakfast Blend tomorrow. If there is anything not to tamper with it's my coffee. I live off the beverage, and I'm not about to wrinkle my nose in distaste for the next two weeks until the European Roast is finished.
