Wall Street Burn

Posted Fri, 06/27/03

This morning, Wilbert and I met his co-workers at a local diner called the Wall Street Café. Every month or so, we meet the same group for breakfast. The company is very enjoyable. Trying the Wall Street Café was a first (we met previously at Perkins). The atmosphere was very warm and clean - better yet, the establishment was only a few miles from our house. An old-fashioned counter with stools was situated in the front, with additional tables and booths further in.

We sat at a table in the front corner and settled in. I rarely eat breakfast at home, so when we do go out to dine, I'm sometimes at a loss over what to order. One of my favorite meals is biscuits and gravy, but I'm hesitant to have it in a restaurant because it inevitably comes to the table tepid or outright cold. So I played it safe and ordered one of the specials (eggs, hash browns, bacon and toast). At the last minute, I opted for a side of sausage gravy for the hash browns.

I'm not a big fan of eggs, so I pecked away at those but finally gave them to Wilbert. The hash browns were excellent, and the bacon was meaty and perfectly cooked semi-soft (four pieces of bacon came with the meal; I saved two for Foofer). However, the white toast was stiff and hard to chew. After several bites of the hash browns, I made the mistake of adding the sausage gravy. It was bloody awful. I'm not sure if the chef added to the gravy, but it was horrendous. Bits of lumpy flour floated in the mix, and there was a strong flavor of seasoning which completely topped off the ruination of the gravy. I'm uncertain if the flavor came from sausage, or was added during the cooking process, but I think it was an herb mix that has no place in white gravy.

We live and learn. There are literally hundreds of places to eat in Spokane, but I'm hoping we never frequent the Wall Street Café again. However, there are apparently reasons to go back for luncheon meals at the diner, according to KXLY food writer Mike Fitzsimmons:

Wall Street burgers are outstanding. Big and juicy, you'll find them more than an ample meal. They're specially wrapped to keep you from wearing any of their terrific sauce back to the office. I like that feature a lot! The lunch menu offers a wide variety of taste treats, and the Wall Street Cafe has some luscious deserts.

To each his own. As I write this blog entry four hours after the breakfast event, I'm still queasy and have enough heartburn to light up the city of Spokane.
