Garden Report

The results of Wilbert's garden labor are finally starting to bear fruit, so to speak. He planted our vegetable garden at the end of May. Despite the influx of leaf-eating pests, we're starting to see some rapid growth. The corn stalks are now as high as my mid-section, and the beans are climbing up the makeshift trellis Wilbert put in place. The zucchini (hit the worst by pests) are coming out of their doldrums and blooming with large gold-yellow flowers.
We'd given up the lettuce for lost, but it is growing now as well. I don't understand how some of the plants survived the pest onslaught, but I'm just relieved they're coming out of it. A few weeks after planting the initial garden in May, Wilbert threw some Early Girl Hybrid tomato seeds at the end of a few rows. They have sprouted as high as the tomatoes we put in the garden from plants (which now have plump little yellow tomatoes positioned, waiting to turn). The green onions, broccoli and peppers are also climbing their way to the heavens. The only hopeless cause appears to be the carrots - they look like stubby little imps among the other soaring greens.
Hopefully in a few weeks time we'll be sitting down to our fresh vegetables as part of a meal, and then all of the labor and fretting will have been worth it.
