Eating with Good Company

I've been terribly lax about writing because we've had company for the last week. Here's a brief rundown of the food consumed during the visit from Wilbert's family, including his mother Elva and his brother George:

A&W Shrimp Basket (Friday 05/20/05): The shrimp was good, but I declined the fries. After eating the shrimp, my stomach was upset for an entire day.

Chinese food from Safeway's deli (Saturday lunch, 05/21/05): Included chicken chow mein, fried rice, pork egg rolls and sweet and sour chicken.

Kyoto Teriyaki Restaurant (I can live with this every day, but we had it for Saturday's dinner 05/21/05): Tender chicken teriyaki, white sticky rice, steamed veggies, Gyoza and Japanese egg rolls. The egg rolls from Kyoto have a paper-thin coating rather than the doughy crust of the Chinese variety.

Casa de Oro (another favorite; lunch on Sunday 05/22/05): The appetizers include warmed thin tortilla chips with salsa and refried beans. My entry was a cheese enchilada, a shredded chicken burrito, refried beans and Mexican rice. I'm not usually a big fan of refried beans, but the dish at Casa de Oro is the best. A few months ago Wilbert asked the waiter how the beans were made, so we're going to try the restaurant version at home in the near future.

Home-cooked meals (05/23/05): Wilbert made breakfast pancakes for his mother. I refrained. However, come lunchtime I assembled chicken and salami sandwiches for me and my mother-in-law as Wilbert and his brother were off seeing the latest Star Wars epic "Revenge of the Sith."

Eating Outdoors (05/24/05): We had a lovely time in the backyard with our new table set and the barbeque. On the menu was teriyaki steak, Grilled Potatoes Labrecque, fresh sliced mushrooms sautéed in butter, mixed vegetables, steamed broccoli and grilled hot dogs. We ended up taking the food inside the house because the day grew quite warm, but we were all well-satisfied by the time the feasting was over. Wilbert and his brother even had a few glasses of Canadian Mist.

Mid-Week Grub (05/25/05): One of Wilbert's favorite breakfast dishes is "Huevos Con Tomate Cebolla," which is merely scrambled eggs with tomato and onion. After the eggs are cooked, he scoops them up in bites with flour tortillas warmed on the stove element, never lifting a fork. His mother and brother hadn't had the dish for a long time, so he prepared it Wednesday morning. George is not normally a breakfast eater either, but he loved "Huevos Con Tomate Cebolla." Side bits included fried spam slices and hash browns. Since Elva developed Parkinson's disease and continues to struggle with other medical issues, she hasn't prepared food in quite a while so home-cooked meals are appreciated.

I had leftover steak for lunch on Wednesday (05/25/05), and dinner was from Dominoes Pizza. We all sat down with slices and watched the DVD "Gangs of New York," which was a gift sent to me from a friend.

I managed to get out of breakfast every day as I don't like food in the morning. I start getting hunger pangs around noon, and only then am I ready to eat. Lunch is my meal of the day. On the other hand, my husband can eat around the clock and probably would if I let him.

Plus, I'm not a big dinner eater but when Wilbert and his brother came home with Kyoto Teriyaki last Saturday night I couldn't resist.

Now that the visit is over, I'm looking forward to returning to my normal routine. Salads for lunch, maybe a bowl of soup here and there or a chicken sandwich, and my evening snack of blond pistachios.
