I've always been accused of treating my pets better than my fellow humans. One of my former husbands was actually quite resentful of my "furry" kids, angrily claiming I loved my dog and cat more than I did him. In hindsight, he was right!
To that end, we've assembled the Furry Friends Cookbook for those who feel the same way about their pets - specifically cats and dogs.
Recipes in the Furry Friends Cookbook can be prepared as occasional treats for dogs and cats but are not meant to replace their daily diets or to address their essential nutritional needs. Try serving home-cooked meals once a week as an alternate to commercially prepared pet food.
Some of the recipes are considered "treats" while others are very healthy. However, the nutritional needs of individual dogs and cats may vary. I typically add canine or feline multi-vitamins to each recipe, using a mortar and pestle to grind the vitamins into a fine powder. Please use your best judgment or consult with your veterinarian before feeding treats to your pets.
Recommended for all recipes: Add multi-purpose canine and feline vitamins in the preparation of recipes to provide optimum nutrition for your pet (s). Use a mortar and pestle to crush the vitamins into a fine powder, and then mix well with the other ingredients.
Special Note for Cats: Before attempting to prepare homemade food for your cat, please read Making Cat Food by Lisa A. Pierson, DVM. It is best to be completely informed before undertaking any changes to your cat's diet and nutritional needs.
