Lunch in the Snow & Ice

The roads were dreadful today. It snowed and iced-up so many times the ground was dangerously slick, but despite this we ventured out to get lunch at the Safeway deli by our home (the scene where we had out first fender-bender of the season). The streets were devoid of much traffic, thankfully, but it was still slow-going.

We could have stayed home and defrosted a package of chicken and cooked lunch, but both of us were too hungry to wait long and neither of us wanted to even contemplate clearing up the typical kitchen mess. Canned food holds no allure today, although thanks to Wilbert and his penchant for sales we have plenty of it.

The deli at Safeway includes the China Express, and as the title implies there is a variety of prepared Chinese food available. It may sound strange, but the food is actually quite delicious; as good as any found in a Chinese restaurant.

I had the sweet-and-sour chicken, along with a chicken spring roll. The deli offers other foods as well: fried chicken (we bought Foofer two chicken breasts and he ate them sans the bones), pizza sticks (wonderfully melt-in-the-mouth flavor), burritos, flautas, mashed potatoes, gravy, French fries, potato wedges, chow mien, fried rice, chicken tenders and filets, and a number of Chinese entrees (Szechwan, beef & broccoli, almond chicken). We were able to get out of the store for under $20, which I consider a lot of food for the money. Everything tasted wonderful to boot.

*Archived Blog Post (Chinese Deli Lunch, Wed, 08/06/03): One of my favorite spots for a quick lunch is the deli inside of the Safeway grocery store. The deli is called China Express. They serve the most wonderful fried rice and Chicken Almond Ding. Sounds odd, I know, considering there are a multitude of Chinese restaurants lining the main thoroughfare of Division Street in Spokane. The China Express does a good job - whether they're housed in a fancy building or inside a grocery is of no consequence. Wilbert typically opts for kielbasa, spiced chicken wings, shredded meat burritos and macaroni salad. And Foofer always gets a nicely plump chicken breast.
