Jordanian stuffed savory pastries
3 C flour
2 tsp. salt
1 stick butter or margarine, softened
1/2 C warm water
Filling for Sambusak:
1 onion, minced
1 LB lean ground beef, chopped
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/3 C pine nuts
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 egg, beaten
2 C olive oil (for frying)
Salt & black pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 400-degrees F. In a bowl, mix together flour and salt. Cream the butter or margarine using an electric or hand mixer, slowly adding the flour/salt mixture with warm water. Knead the dough into a ball. Allow dough to rest. In a skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil; sauté onions and garlic until soft and translucent. Add meat to skillet with onions; brown meat and remove from heat. Sprinkle nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon, salt and black pepper on the meat; stir. Mix pine nuts into meat.
Break off pieces of dough and shape each into 3" flat rounds. Place 1 teaspoon of meat mixture into the center of each round. Fold in half and seal edges tightly (using egg whites or water if necessary). Place rounds on ungreased baking sheet. Bake until golden brown in color, about fifteen to twenty minutes. Serve.
