Now that Thanksgiving is over and it's officially the "Christmas" season, Food Fare has re-vamped their holiday offerings with new recipes and bits about Christmas traditions around the world, the histories of Santa Claus, the North Pole and Christmas Trees, unique gift-wrapping ideas, how to say "Merry Christmas" in different languages, and suggested resources.

Some of the recipes include Apple Yule Logs, Christmas Rum Balls, Gingerbread Cake, Kourambiethes (Greek Christmas Cookies), Lime Shortbread, Limerick Ham, Mailanderli (Swiss Milano Cookies), Mushroom Pockets, Nusstorte, Pecan Kisses, Spanish Hot Chocolate, Wassail, Welsh Christmas Pudding and much more.

Christmas Recipes

I often spend part of the holiday season baking, usually giving the goodies away. I'm not an accomplished baker by a long shot, as I've always been more comfortable with savory dishes. However, for the holiday season I look for easy yet unique cookie, cake and pastry recipes. The following is one of them, tried and true:

Mailanderli (Swiss Milano Butter Cookies)

1 C butter

1 C sugar

Pinch of salt

3 eggs

1 lemon

2-1/4 C flour

1 egg yolk

In a large bowl, stir the butter until smooth. Add the sugar, salt and three of the eggs. Stir until the ingredients are evenly mixed. Grate lemon peel and add to mixture. Add the flour, mixing well; knead into a soft dough on a floured surface. Cover the dough and let rest for about two hours in a cool place. Cut the dough into parts and roll out on a flat surface, approximately 1/4" thick. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters of your choice; place on a cookie sheet. Let stand for about ten minutes. Just before baking, brush the cookies with the egg yolk. Bake for ten minutes at 400-degrees F. Allow to cool before serving.

Don't forget to have a look at Food Fare's Christmas newsletter. It has a lovely design, if I do say so myself.
