Mac & Cheese Flecks

Posted Fri, 08/29/03

Last night, I threw together macaroni and cheese with seasoned, fried hamburger. Talk about the dregs, although the meal was actually quite tasty. It must've been the simple seasonings: onion flakes, paprika, salt and black pepper.

I'd purchased four boxes of Western Family Macaroni & Cheese the day before at .25 cents a piece. I usually buy Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, but couldn't pass up the price of the Western Family brand.

The powdered cheese mix was harder than a rock and wouldn't fully dissolve even in the heated noodles, milk and butter. Either I grabbed a few stale boxes or the result is typical of the Western Family brand, although its doubtful. I've used other products from the company and they are typically as good as a name brand. However, for .25 cents per box, I wasn't about to rush back to the store and ask for a refund.

My simple dish turned out fine despite the cheese mix, although I caught Wilbert picking out flecks of hardened cheese as we ate.

I told him it gave the dish character.
