Sunday Slog

Much to my chagrin, I served Hamburger Helper for dinner tonight. I tried avoiding the scenario for as long as possible. However, because of my recent writing schedule, anything remotely resembling food has become scarce in my house of late.

I was so preoccupied all last week that our Saturday grocery list was quite short: just the bare necessities, such as Coffee Mate, bread and milk. The only meal I "whipped" up quickly entailed defrosting a bit of hamburger and grabbing the stroganoff flavor from the pantry shelf.

Hamburger Helper (Stroganoff)

The actual hamburger was the worst possible kind to buy as well – it came in one of those tubes similar to Jimmy Dean sausage packaging. I had to squeeze the beef out after snipping off one of the ends. Sounds perfectly horrible, doesn't it? There was hardly any meat to boot. Once I finished browning the glob, there was a nauseating amount of grease (which I drained, of course).

There was nothing delicate or profound about the vegetable side dish, either: just a bowl of frozen mixed vegetables slapped into the microwave and served alongside the hamburger wonder. No dessert, no frills – but I must say Wilbert seemed rather happy to get the meal at any rate.

God only knows when I'll make the time to fix another one.
