Soupe Aux Pois

Posted Mon, 08/25/03

One of the early birthday gifts I received from Mum and Dad was four large cans of Canadian pea soup. Soupe Aux Pois - as I've always known it - is made by a company called "Habitant" located in Montreal.

The soup is very unlike the American equivalent, being much thicker as no water needs to be added to the mix when heating. It almost looks and tastes like bean and bacon soup, but with a much lighter color and a definitely better taste. In lieu of finding the Soupe Aux Pois at a local grocery store, I found a recipe for the soup at the web site Joyce's Fine Cooking (now defunct).

Last night I took a remaining portion of old baguette bread – hard as a rock – and constructed a sub sandwich of sorts using miscellaneous deli meats in the fridge: pastrami, chicken, bologna and ham. Before adding the meats and slices of cheddar and mozzarella cheeses, I buttered each half of the baguette bread liberally. I grilled the concoction in the broiler, and served the rather long and skinny sandwich with Soupe Aux Pois.

Wilbert enjoyed the meal, but probably wondered what happened to my usually elaborate Sunday dinner.
